About PEMDAS Practice

A free, step-by-step order of operations tool for students in grades 3–8, their teachers, and their parents. Built by Model Teaching.

Why we built this

Order of operations trips up students all through grades 3–8. Most practice hands them an expression, asks for a final answer, and marks it right or wrong. A bare score tells a student nothing about wherethey slipped: forgetting that multiplication comes before addition, evaluating the wrong parentheses first, or doing one step's arithmetic wrong on an otherwise correct path.

PEMDAS Practice makes every step visible. The solver shows which operation PEMDAS calls for next and checks two things: did you choose the right operation, and did you compute it correctly? Telling an order error apart from an arithmetic error is what lets a student practice the part they actually need.

What's included

  • Step-by-step solver

The signature feature. An expression collapses one operation at a time. Students choose which operation PEMDAS calls for next and compute its value. The feedback names the mistake: an order error or an arithmetic error, instead of a blank 'wrong'.

  • Equal-priority rule

4 × 10 ÷ 2 has two valid first steps, and the solver accepts either one. 8 − 3 + 2 has only one correct order, so the solver rejects the out-of-order choice and explains why. Most free tools get this wrong.

  • Multiple practice modes

Step-by-Step solver, Quiz (final answer or first step), three-pile Flashcards, and a Playground with Present Mode for live classroom demonstration.

  • Printable worksheets

Four printable layouts: Evaluate, Show Your Steps, Circle the First Step, and a Worked-Step Answer Key. Choose a grade-band preset or build a custom set and download as a PDF.
