Privacy

Spelling Practice is made for children to use. There are no accounts, and we never ask for a name, email, or other personal details. Here is exactly how information is handled:

  • Lists, scores and settings are saved in your own browser, on your device. We never receive a score or anything your child types. Three things reach our servers: worksheets, the recorded voice, and a problem report if someone sends one.
  • When you make a worksheet, the list's words and sentences, its title and the options you chose are sent to our server so it can build the PDF. Depending on the sheet, that can include the letters you marked as tricky or each word's spelling pattern. We use them to make the file and do not store them. Please don't type student names into a list title, a week label or a sentence, because those are printed.
  • The two sheets built from practice results, My missed words and the review packet, are made by your own browser. The words your child missed stay on this device.
  • Words and sentences from our bank play from recordings stored with this app. When a test's start screen opens, your browser downloads the recordings for that list, the same ones whatever your child got right or wrong. Review also downloads the recordings for your five newest other lists. It asks for sections of a large file, not for words by name, but each section matches a particular word or sentence, so those requests could show our host which bank words are on the list. Our code keeps none of this, and our host's request log is kept for at most one day. Words outside the bank and sentences you type aren't requested. On the screen where you type a list, the Play button downloads one word when you press it. To keep a list's tests from making these requests, choose “This device's voice” in its Practice settings.
  • A word with no recording, or a sentence you typed, is spoken by your own device, using a voice already installed on it. If the device has no offline voice, the app stays silent for that word rather than send it to an outside service.
  • No AI runs while you use this app. Sentences for typed lists come from a bank we wrote ahead of time, and the recordings were made ahead of time with a computer-generated voice. Nothing you type is sent to an AI service.
  • We use one analytics service, Fathom Analytics. It counts page visits without cookies and without tracking individual people. There are no cookies anywhere on this site, so there is nothing to accept or dismiss. You can switch analytics off for your browser from the Model Teaching Apps Privacy Notice.

What this app saves in your browser

Everything is saved under names that start with mt_spelling_, and Settings can erase all of it at once. The one exception is your light or dark choice, saved as theme, which stays until you clear your browser's data.

WhatDetails
Saved listsTitle, week label, grade, the words, their sentences, any "say it like" spellings and marked tricky letters, and the practice settings you chose for that list.
Practice progressWhich words are in the Study Pile or Got It, how many times each was right or wrong and when, the last 10 scores, and week-plan progress. Right or wrong only; what a child typed is not kept.
A list you're still typingIts title, week label, grade and words, and any sentences and marks chosen so far, so a refresh doesn't lose them. Kept in this tab only and erased when it closes.
The test in progressThe order of the words, which word your child is on, and right or wrong so far, so a refresh doesn't lose the test. Kept in this tab only and erased when it closes. What a child typed is not kept.
Saved worksheet buildsThe worksheet options you chose to save, the title and week label you typed, and which list they're for. Deleting the list deletes them too.
SettingsTheme, celebration effects, Clear on close, the grade and word source you last chose, and whether two one-time notes have been shown.
A random device idMade in this browser and never sent anywhere. It keeps your saved lists grouped on this device.

Children's privacy. This app is built to collect as little as possible from children. There are no accounts, no cookies, and nothing a child types is sent to us or stored by us. Parents, teachers and schools can read the full detail, including what our hosting and analytics providers receive and how long they keep it, in the Model Teaching Apps Privacy Notice, which also lists how to contact us.

You can erase everything this app has saved in your browser from its Settings page, or erase every Model Teaching app at once from the notice linked above.
